“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
I always was puzzled of what being “more than conquerors” meant. Conquerors win the battle, they are the ones who go out there, fight and win the victory. Ok, we as Christians are in a spiritual battle, and we have victory over Satan, but how are we MORE than conquers?
Around Christmas, my grandpa brought up this subject. He explained being more than conquers means winning without doing anything to gain that victory. It is similar to the Bible story when an Israelite city was starving because they were surrounded by the enemy. A couple lepers decided to go out and approach the enemy. Once they reached the enemy camps, they found that there were no soldiers there, but everything was left, so they ate and were filled. The lepers were conquerors of the enemy, yet they did nothing. They were “more than conquerors.”
Being “more than conquerors” means that we overcome Satan, sin and evilness but not by anything we’ve done, but rather what Christ has done. In John 16:33, Jesus says ‘These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” Jesus has already overcome, and that is why we, as believers, are more than conquerors.
When Jesus died upon the cross and rose again, he not only conquered Satan, sin, and death but also gave that victory to us, who did nothing to deserve it. In that victory, we are “more than conquerors.”
But, how should we live with this knowledge? How should this affect our daily lives? The fact that we are “more than conquerors” means that we don’t have to worry about fighting the daily battle on our own. God has already won it, and He is there beside us to help us through every struggle we face. Romans 8:31, “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” If we are fighting the good fight, if we are doing God’s will, nothing will be impossible– for God is able to do anything He wills.
